POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
AMERICORPS MEMBERS – LEGAL ASSISTANTS
Position Description:
Chemung County Neighborhood Legal Services, a division of Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. (LAWNY) currently has AmeriCorps positions available at its office located in Elmira, New York. LAWNY is a not-for-profit law firm which provides civil legal services to low-income clients in a fourteen-county region in western New York State. The Elmira office serves the counties of Chemung and Schuyler and provides representation primarily in the areas of home foreclosures, housing, healthcare access, public benefits, SSI and employment law.
AmeriCorps members will work as legal assistants, and will be offered the opportunity for direct, substantive legal experience, excellent training and a chance to make a critical difference in the lives of poor people and their communities. They will team with dedicated professionals in an established poverty law program.
Member Benefits:
AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $14,000 annually, and may qualify for an educational award of $4,725, basic health insurance, child care expenses, and suspension of student loans. A full one-year commitment is required, a second year is possible. The term of service must start before December 31, 2009.
Member Responsibilities:
1. Provide screening and intake for poor persons seeking civil legal assistance;
2. Assist in the recruitment and support of volunteers;
3. Assist staff attorneys in providing legal services to clients ;
4. Work with community agencies serving the poor to strengthen collaborations ;
5. Provide outreach and community education for targeted groups/clients;
5. Participate on relevant staff committees/work groups;
6. Participate in impact cases or projects.
Member Qualifications:
Applicants should have at least two years of college or equivalent experience. Prior experience working with the poor or disadvantaged is preferred. Members should have a personal commitment to eliminating poverty and its effects in our communities and to high standards of professional performance.
